we are asking a few of our previous competitors their thoughts on the subject. This episode brings you the 2013 Portland US Air Guitar Qualifier
Second Place Winner Whalin' BigAIr aka Mahlon Koopman
who then went on to compete in the
San Francisco, California West Coast Semi-Finals.
When I was in the 6th grade my teacher would call me Whalin' Mahlon cause of my...well...air guitar skills! Yes I was known for air shredding as a child. BigAir kinda came natural due to my tallness. "How's the weather down there??"
If someone asks you "Why would you play an AIR guitar and not a REAL guitar?" How do you answer?
What different cities have you competed in and which was your favorite?
Besides Portland every year, I've done Brooklyn, Las Vegas, Seattle, Denver and San Francisco. Although every trip has been amazing, I have to put Brooklyn at the top. This was the first time I got to experience the "its a family vibe". Meeting cats from all over the country for the first time was so cool! I realized I belonged to this crazy group then and would be doing this for a very long time.
Do you have any advice to anyone who is thinking about competing, if so what would it be?
If you had a choice between an ALL expenses paid first class 3 month trip around the world OR a 4 day weekend trip to Finland where your flight, sub par accomodations and entry to the air guitar Darkhorse competition is covered giving you a chance to make it to the WORLD stage, which experience would you choose and why?
Finland, no question. Because in my case it would just be continuing the ride....
OK now I'm officially pumped for the 2014 season! "Owe" I just did a scissor kick....
